Walnut is a premium domestic hardwood valued for its rich color and incredible finishing qualities. Moderately dense and very stable, Walnut is strong in relation to its weight. It has excellent machining and superb finishing qualities. Walnut trees produce generally shorter logs resulting in a shortage of longer length boards. Walnut has a medium-fine to coarse texture which is even and uniform. A slightly open grain, patterning varies from straight to wavy and irregular. In its appearance, Walnut has clearly visible annual growth rings. Heartwood is a variegated dark chocolate brown, sometimes with purplish hue; sapwood is nearly white, often steam-stained at the sawmill to blend with heartwood. Walnut is used in fine furniture as well as fixtures, cabinets, flooring, gun stocks, interior trim, entertainment cabinets and musical instrument cases.
